About Yunnan
Yunnan is a very alluring place; in fact the name is translated to mean South of Clouds, a reference to the high mountains of this ancient Chinese Province.
Located in the southwest, Yunnan covers an area about the size of two sates of Michigan! The lush and beautiful area is mainly mountains, rivers, and lakes,
and 30% are covered with original, uncut forests. These primitive forests, along with tropical rain forests, are home to many wildlife creatures including
gigantic elephants and small lively monkeys!
The climate is subtropical, but there are diverse topographical microclimates, from year-round, snow-capped mountains to glaciers, from still lakes to health0giving hot springs, from highlands to beautiful green valleys. Yunnan is a primary source for medicinal herbs, about 40% of those grown in China! And, more than 6,000 of the 15,000 plant species grown in China are in Yunnan.
Yunnan is not only rich in plants, animals, and original forests; it is a rich combination of 26 ethnic nationalities who live in harmony and peace while maintaining their strong local identities.
